Those who suffer from back pain know that posture is a fundamental element to alleviate these annoying discomforts. From the way you walk to the way you sit, the position you take during the day is very important, but also the position you take during the night.
All of us, in fact, spends an average of 7 to 9 hours on our bed, so sleeping properly is the first step for the well-being and health of our back. But what position should you take while you sleep if you have problems or want to prevent them?
Let's start from the supine position considered most suitable in case you suffer from back pain. In this position, in fact, the weight of the body is well distributed and the head, neck and spine are perfectly aligned. Breathing also benefits in this position, further promoting wellbeing and correct rest.
Now let's move on to the opposite one, the prone position. If you sleep in this way, you should place a pillow at stomach and hips level to help align your spine. However, this is an inadvisable position which could cause considerable discomfort. In addition to making breathing more difficult, sleeping on the front, your head is forced to stand on its side, causing stress at neck and shoulder height. One way to avoid pain in this area is to place your head on a pillow that is not too thick.
And what about sleeping on the side? Sleeping in this way can be the right choice for those who suffer from back pain: this position, in fact, helps breathing and also stretches the spine, provided however that the legs are held correctly so as to maintain proper alignment and avoid back torsions.
In addition to the position during sleep, if back pain, lumbosciatica and sciatica persist, other remedies, such as postural gymnastics and electromagnetic therapy, can be used. The magnetotherapy in fact, thanks to the low and high frequency fields, promotes muscle relaxation, reduces inflammation, helps to improve physical performance and thus contains the annoying back pain.
